I’ve been trying to get away from the desk more and travel but it’s hard because of the desire to bring in gains and also working on the final touches of the hedge fund management firm.
But this weekend I made it out to Rincon, Puerto Rico with some friends to check things out.
I was here last year to meet another hedge fund manager and it was intriguing to me because it reminded me exactly of San Diego, CA.
This part of the island is filled with a lot of “Gringos” and surfers - it’s an interesting dynamic because when you’re here it doesn’t feel like Puerto Rico. That’s hard to explain but if you’ve spent time on the island you’d understand.
It’s pretty much your typical surfer town so that’s why the feeling of San Diego/Huntington beach which is cool because it feels like home.
Where I live on the island is pretty boring - think of it like Newport Beach almost in that everything shuts down at 8pm; a very sleepy beach town.
So it’s good to be on this part of the island and I’m looking forward to it.
Travel & Perspective
The other day I decided to get a TikTok for The LongVol - I really would like to expand the readership and that report is a gem if you actually take the time to read it and use info in it.
So, TikTok it was.
I posted this video of Jamie Dimon and while I’m not a fan of the banks what he said was spot on.
The video hit 101K views so far and the comment section is filled with typical negative mindset folks who either a) blame everyone else for their problems b) just want to share their opinion.
In short, he was saying that traveling to other countries and exposing yourself to other cultures provides perspective. If anyone is reading this in their early 20’s I’d encourage you to do that.
You don’t have to do it on a baller budget and it can’t be a 2-week holiday.
If you can experience and travel the world for 3-6 months and work remote do that at least once in your life.
The perspective you’ll gain, the people you meet and clarity you might find will provide you dividends in perpetuity.
But like people in that video your perspective on things shapes everything that you do in your life.
How you trade/invest in markets, how you view relationships - all of it.
So I’d say this to anyone - figure out a way to do it at least once. I did that a lot in my early 20’s and then again about 5 years ago and it changed things for me dramatically.
Especially in understanding things from a macro perspective.
You won’t start to appreciate freedom until you are traveling on your own schedule and own agenda.
You might not even know what you want out of life or the markets until you do that and when you do that you gain perspective.
And when you come back from that then you can make adjustments.
There were guys on a desk I was on in Los Angeles back in 2012 that are still in LA on that grind - that’s the life they want and that’s fine.
It wasn’t for me - but I knew that and learned that from travel and gaining perspective.
That’s it.
I am headed out to grab a coffee at this local surfer spot and trade/watch this NFP data.
P.S.

Completely agree with your thoughts about traveling. I traveled around the world when I was in the Navy. I am always very thankful for what we have here. Things could always be worse.
